Automotive Dealership LED Lighting Procurement Checklist (8 Items)
Use this 8-point checklist when preparing an RFQ or purchase order for an automotive dealership LED lighting project. Each item addresses a specification that, if missed, results in a lighting system that fails to showcase vehicles effectively, creates safety hazards in service bays, or generates complaints from neighboring properties. Print this checklist and attach it to your procurement documentation.
- ☐ Verify CRI 90+ (95+ for luxury) with R9 ≥ 80 for all showroom fixtures. Any fixture illuminating vehicles in the showroom must meet CRI ≥ 90 minimum with R9 (saturated red) ≥ 80 for accurate paint color rendering. Request the manufacturer’s TM-30-18 report showing Rf, Rg, and the color vector graphic, not just the CRI Ra value. For luxury/premium dealerships (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Lexus, Porsche), specify CRI 95+ throughout the showroom. - ☐ Design and verify the 5-layer showroom lighting system. The showroom is not adequately lit by overhead fixtures alone. Confirm the lighting design includes all five layers: (1) Ambient/General, (2) Accent on vehicles (vertical surfaces), (3) Wall washing (brand imagery), (4) Cove/Indirect (ceiling glow), and (5) Track spot on featured/hero vehicle. Each layer must be independently dimmable and scene-programmable. The ambient layer must deliver 3× the horizontal illuminance of the accent layer’s vertical illuminance. Request a photometric layout showing predicted lux levels on vehicle horizontal and vertical surfaces with uniformity ratios. - ☐ Confirm service bay fixtures meet IP44 minimum (IP65 recommended) with chemical resistance certification. Service bay fixtures must be rated for the specific environmental hazards they face: water spray (IP44/IP65), oil and chemical splash (chemical-resistant powder coat and gaskets), and physical impact (IK08 minimum lens). Request the manufacturer’s chemical compatibility test data for: motor oil (SAE 5W-30), brake fluid (DOT 3/4), coolant (ethylene glycol), transmission fluid (ATF), and engine degreaser. Specify impact-rated tempered glass lenses, not acrylic or polycarbonate. All fixtures must be passive-cooled (no fans) — service bays are dusty environments where fans clog and fail. - ☐ Specify full cutoff optics (BUG B0-U0-G0) for all exterior lot fixtures. Verify the fixture’s BUG rating, B0-U0-G0 is the target; B0-U0-G1 is acceptable if house-side shields are installed. Full cutoff is mandatory for: light trespass compliance (residential neighbors), driver safety (no glare to adjacent roads), dark-sky ordinance compliance (many municipalities now require FCO for new installations), and energy efficiency (light directed upward is wasted).
